Among my list of most FAQ's resides a crowd favorite: "where is your favorite place you've ever been?" My response will vary based on what day it is, what mood I'm in, the weather, or if I'm hangry or not. But, 9 times out of 10, I'll respond in the same way.
My favorite place in the world is Iceland.
And it should be yours too.
I visited Iceland at the tail end of a backpacking trip through Europe with my dad. My flight cost $121 from Oslo, which is more than I would probably ever spend on a European flight in my life, but I had been Jonesing to go for years, and now was my chance. And it was 100% worth it. Here's why an adventure to Iceland should be at the top of your wanderlist.
1.) It's the most peaceful place on the planet.
Literally. For the 3rd year in a row, Iceland has been ranked the most peaceful country in the world. Iceland hasn't had a murder in like 10000 years. If you follow the Reykjavik Met Police on Instagram @Logreglan, which has 160k followers, it's almost a mockery of how little crime there is. They post photos of puppies, their new motorcycles, Icelandic Halloween, and jumping pictures. Now who wouldn't want to visit there.
2.) The landscape is literally magical.
3.) Fossar on fossar.
"Fossar" or Icelandic for waterfalls, are EVERYWHERE throughout the country. From Skogafoss in the South to Dettifoss in the Northeast, you can be almost literally blown away by their power.
4.) The Northern Lights.
Depending on what time of year you visit, you have a pretty dece shot at checking out the Northern Lights in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. (Although to be fair, most countries where you can see the Northern lights are pretty stunning).
5.) The Blue Lagoon
One of the most popular activities during the winter for Icelandic locals is going for a swim outside.... Wait what!??! Almost all of Iceland's electricity is sourced from geothermal, which means you can literally bathe outside in natural hot springs. YEP. This place is real.
6.) Reykjavik is one of the most precious little towns.
Most of the country's small population lives in Reykjavik. It's an adorable small capital, with friendly people, delicious food, and links to all over Iceland. (They also have a Taco Bell, which is very much worth noting).
7.) They literally have a volcano named Eyjafjallajökull.
Remember when it erupted in 2010 and everyone on the news flipped out while trying to say it. If you don't remember, watch this video. For similar reasons as you should visit Wales, the names of the landmarks should be enough.
8.) Icelandic people are BEAUTIFUL.
They're all tall, blonde haired, blue eyed. I mean, come on. If you're looking to find a husband or wife, better get on moving to the land of stunning people.
9.) You can literally stop there on the way to Europe.
Iceland isn't THAT far away. And, WOWAir is now offering FREE stop overs on the way to Europe from places like Boston, Montreal and New York. So that's like two trips for the price of one. Check out WOWAir's website to learn more. I'm gonna say WOW about that one!
